Naming and history of Sherpur:
Sherpur is an enlightened ancient town in the context of history, tradition and movement. The earlier name of Sherpur was Dashakhania. Sher Ali Ghazi, the last zamindar of the Ghazi dynasty, became the Jagirdar of Daskahaniya Baju in the beginning of the eighteenth century. This famous ruler ruled for twenty-one years from the present Gazi's Farm or Garjaripa. Later, the present day Sherpur was named after this legendary ruler. The name of this region was Sherpur circle during British period and Pakistan period. Sherpur was included in Mymensingh when it was elevated to Mymensingh district on 1st May 1787 AD. On June 16, 1869 Sherpur Municipality was established. On 08 January 1979, Sherpur was elevated to a subdivision. After the independence of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared Sherpur as the 61st district. On 22 February 1984, Sherpur was made a district.
History of Sherpur Court:
Around 1861, the Munsifi Court was established at Sherpur. Later in 1988, Sherpur District and Sessions Judge Court was established on the court's own land in Girddanarayanpur Mohalla. After that, Sherpur District and Sessions Judge Court started functioning from 1 December 1988 in the former Nayani Zamindar house adjacent to the District Collector's building. At this time, Mr. Mohammad Ali Khan joined Sherpur as the first District and Sessions Judge. Sherpur has one Additional District and Sessions Judge Court, two Joint District and Sessions Judge Courts, two Senior Assistant Judge Courts and three Assistant Judge Courts.
Magistrate Court:
It is said that the Joint Magistrate Court was established at Sherpur in 1828. Around 1864 Sherpur Criminal Court was created. Later, Mr. Mahmudul Kabir joined as the first Chief Judicial Magistrate on November 1, 2007 after the separation of judicial system in the country. As there is no own court building, the Magistrate Court is being conducted in the District and Sessions Judge Court Building. At present, the district has a total of 9 including Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Senior Judicial Magistrate First Court, Senior Judicial Magistrate Second Court, Senior Judicial Magistrate Third Court, Judicial Magistrate First Court, Judicial Magistrate Second Court, Judicial Magistrate Third Court, Judicial Magistrate Fourth Court. There are t courts. There are 5 administrative courts in this district namely Sherpur Sadar, Srivardi, Nakla, Nalitabari and Jhenaigati.
Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal:
Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal was established in Sherpur district in 2014. The first judge of this tribunal was Mr. Amulya Kumar Sarkar.
Land Survey Tribunal:
There is a Land Survey Tribunal at Sherpur. In 2013, the first Land Survey Tribunal was established at Sherpur.
District Legal Aid Office:
There is a Legal Aid Office in Sherpur District. Here, free legal services, dispute resolution and legal advice are provided to distressed poor people. A maternal dairy corner has been established on the ground floor of the main court building under the initiative of the District Legal Aid Office.
Sherpur Lawyers Association:
There is a Traditional Lawyers Association in Sherpur. Established in 1864 as Chowki Bar, the location of today's Sherpur District Bar Association.
